First Good Shepherd Lutheran School Principal
Principal and Teacher James E. Krafft
My family and I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1974
where I began my tenure as teacher/principal at First Good Shepherd Lutheran School.
Originally, I graduated from Concordia
Teachers College (now Concordia University), River Forest, Illinois, where
I received my teaching degree. This was followed by graduate work at Long Beach State University where I concentrated on studies
dealing with administrative strategies. Unlike my colleagues in administration,
it has always been my desire to teach 1/2 day in sixth grade where I instruct religion,
math, social studies, current events, and P.E., among other things. It is my responsibility
to interview new families, test new students, hire faculty and staff, help develop
curriculum, counsel students, families, faculty, and staff, prepare a budget, work
with the parent/teacher league, meet on a regular basis with the school board, direct
two musicals during the school year, and coordinate the school calendar.
First Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Las Vegas is
an institution that had its start in 1957, the first Lutheran school in the state
of Nevada and the oldest protestant school in southern Nevada. There are three faculty
members and two staff members who are former students and there are twenty-five
children in the school whose parents also were members of my class in the 70's,
80's, and 90's.
God has blessed me with the joy of teaching and the
pleasure of being able to come to work each day where children are growing in their
physical life, their educational life, and especially in their spiritual life.
It is a blessing to know that our congregation, First
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, is willing to continue to support the school with
financial assistance, a policy of many Lutheran schools across the nation. The greatest
joy for me is the fact that I have chosen to continue teaching for 1/2 day which
helps me keep my hand on the pulse of education and the challenges that teachers
face from day-to-day.
To God be the glory.
