First Good Shepherd Curriculum
The curriculum of First Good Shepherd Lutheran School follows the general course of study for Lutheran schools. This includes a comprehensive study of the Christian doctrine found in the Holy Scriptures. With few exceptions, text books used in our school are State adopted books. Religious texts are produced by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
First Good Shepherd Lutheran School uses the A Beka math series in every grade,
a very challenging program. Our children learn their multiplication tables in second grade with a mastery expected in grade three.
Fractions, decimal problems, and algebra problems are introduced in third and fourth grade.
Prior to graduation from sixth grade our students learn to master these skills at
seventh grade level or above.
A comprehensive phonics and reading program is an important part of the curriculum in our lower grades with the average student being capable of reading at a level from two to four grades above their
current grade level.
The science program used in all grades is the
Discovery Works
series by Concordia Publishing House. Current Events is also taught in every class from the weekly
magazine Time For Kids,
published by Time, Inc.
Physical education and art classes are offered to our students to aid in their athletic and artistic
development.
All God's Singers, our school choir, is
comprised of 40 voices from grades three through six and beginning and advanced
band is also offered for grades three through six.
Spanish is offered as an Early Bird
class and is taught at three levels, beginning, intermediate, and advanced.
Our school is also blessed with a very successful competitive
sports program in volleyball and basketball for grades
five and six. We have a competitive track program for all grades which
culminates with our multi-school annual track meet.
